Recently, Erika started another company, Coccinella Incorporated designing t-shirts featuring various ladybug designs. Proceeds from t-shirt sales have been helping to fund WhizKids.
OK, OK, that isn’t geek enough for you? Just to prove that beauty and brains do mix, read on, McDuff!
Erika was Miss Massachusetts 2004 in the Miss America program and has been working at the Bedford Veterans Affairs Hospital investigating multi parameter bioanalytical techniques of liquid chromatography with electrochemical array and mass spectrometry in the emerging field of metabolomics.
Says Erika, “The efforts are directed at modeling the signaling and process control small molecules in neurodegenerative disorders. The current goals are to determine metabolomic subclassifications in diagnostic categories of Huntington’s, Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s Disease, Schizophrenia and ALS that correlate with or predict the outcome or therapeutic agents in various clinical trials. This line of investigation encompasses and uses much of my previous experience in both technology and biochemical mechanisms. It also provides an opportunity to bring and evaluate concepts developed in basic research into a practical clinically focused effort.”
Starting in the Fall of 2005, Erika will be entering Boston University Medical School’s PhD program in Biochemistry.
